Overview: Fields Edge Farm is a historic family farm in Floyd, Virginia. Situated in a beautiful valley high in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Slusher family has farmed here for over a century. In 2015 Leslie and Roger Slusher began operating Fields Edge, a specialty produce and grass fed beef operation, focused on creating a diversified and sustainable business model for the next phase of their family farm. Specialty produce is Certified Naturally Grown, and HGAP certified on 5+ acres and beef is grazed rotationally in the pastures. Farm products are primarily sold direct-to-consumer, at farmers markets, via pre-orders and online sales, at our own farm store and are used in a line of Farm Kitchen Products. We also work with select wholesale clients, such as local grocers, restaurants and distributors. The farmscape includes an open air packing house, a cooler, warm room, freezer and wash zone. Farm operations are carried out by a small, dedicated team including the Farm Owners, Produce Manager, Retail Sales Manager, Farm Kitchen Product Manager and a small Production Crew.
Job Description: Fields Edge Farm is looking for an exceptional and dynamic candidate to fill the position of Farm Manager. The Farm Manager is the primary person responsible for planning and implementing the production of high quality, HGAP certified, specialty organic vegetables for retail and wholesale outlets. This position requires a robust understanding of organic vegetable production strategies and a talent for leadership including skills in training and communication. This position is a year round, full time position with a seasonal nature. This position works with the Farm Owners and is the primary supervisor for the Field Production Team. An ideal candidate will be able to make detailed plans, manage the day to day operations efficiently, and keep track of long term goals and contribute to the financial sustainability of the business.
Qualifications: • Minimum 2 years experience in organic vegetable production • Ability to develop and lead a team • Tractor and implement experience • Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills • Food Safety (HGAP) Compliance • A valid driver’s license & ability to legally work in the USA • Ability to regularly lift a minimum of 50 pounds • A cell phone & reliable transportation • Excellent references
Responsibilities: The primary responsibilities of the Produce Manager include but are not limited to the following • Plan, prepare, implement and manage growing and marketing plan for crops • Manage Field (5 acres) and Hi Tunnel (two unheated 30’x132’) Growing • Greenhouse Seedling Production • Irrigation Management • Nutrient management- including cover crops, crop rotations and soil health • Pest Management • Disease management • Order Supplies, Maintain tools • Tractor Work and Training • Maintain Records for HGAP, Harvest and Production. • Determine staffing plan for Field Production Team, assign tasks, provide training and review for a staff of 3-6 • Maintaining tools, machinery and infrastructure in clean, orderly and good working order • Work with Retail Sales Coordinator and Wholesale Customers to forecast harvest quantities and conduct sales • Send out weekly wholesale crop availability lists
